Spanish is prevalent in Charlie’s neighborhood in New York City, motivating him to learn the language too. Starting from scratch on BaseLang’s Real World course, Charlie now uses Spanish on a daily basis. Let’s hear his story.

BaseLangStories series puts the spotlight on BaseLang students – asking them about their motivations for learning a foreign language, what impact learning Spanish has had on their lives, advice they have for fellow students, and more.

1. What’s your name and where you are from?

My name is Charlie Micciche. I’m from New York City.

2. Why did you want to learn Spanish?

There are many Latinos in my neighborhood and I always felt bad that I couldn’t speak Spanish.

3. In the past, what did you use to learn Spanish?

I never did anything before BaseLang to learn Spanish. I never even took Spanish in high school.

4. Before BaseLang, which part of learning Spanish did you struggle with the most?

Everything. I literally could not speak, read or write at all.

5. What obstacle would have prevented you from signing up for BaseLang before?

I didn’t have the motivation or the time in the past. I started learning Spanish when the pandemic started.

6. What did you find as a result of signing up?

It took me about 6 months to a year to be able to have a pretty good conversation.

7. What specific feature did you like the most about the Real World program?

I got to speak with the same teacher everyday. We became good friends and I learned a lot everyday from Raquel. I liked that I was clearly getting better each month with her help.

8. How has learning Spanish impacted your life?

I now speak Spanish all the time with people in my neighborhood. I also live with my friends from Mexico so I can speak with them also. About 6 months ago I started teaching people who can only speak Spanish how to drive as a driving instructor.

9. Would you recommend this course, if so, why?

I would definitely recommend BaseLang’s Real World course. It is well made and it gives you a step by step process to learn Spanish.

10. Complete the following sentence “After my first month of BaseLang, I realized that…..”

I could make this a part of my everyday life.

Charlie: "with BaseLang it is very possible to learn Spanish"

11. Anything else to add?

I just wanted to add that I think if a person puts in the effort on a daily basis with BaseLang it is very possible to learn Spanish.
