More infoMayank’s passion for Salsa and Bachata led him to try learning Spanish from an Absolute Beginner level. At first he was skeptical about BaseLang’s offer of unlimited Spanish classes, since he’d studied several other languages with conventional schools. Now that he knows it’s true, he sometimes spends big chunks of his days off learning Spanish! Let’s hear Mayank’s story.
BaseLangStories series puts the spotlight on BaseLang students – asking them about their motivations for learning a foreign language, what impact learning Spanish has had on their lives, advice they have for fellow students, and more.
1. What’s your name and where you are from?
My name is Mayank Gangwar and I am from India.
2. Why did you want to learn Spanish?
I have been dancing Salsa and Bachata for the last 5 years and I have listened to Spanish music a lot. I always wanted to learn Spanish so that I can understand the music much better and enhance my dancing experience. Moreover, I have a lot of friends from Spain and Latin America. It would be a nice surprise to them when they find that I can speak Spanish.
3. In the past, what did you use to learn Spanish?
Duolingo.
4. Before BaseLang, which part of learning Spanish did you struggle with the most?
I didn’t have any knowledge about grammar. I just knew a few words. I started from Absolute Beginner level.
5. What obstacle would have prevented you from signing up for BaseLang before?
The trust issue. Is it really possible to book unlimited hours? But after signing up I was shocked that it is really true.
6. What did you find as a result of signing up?
I found that there are around 310 teachers from which I can choose anyone if they are available for a specific time slot. I was very surprised to see the huge pool of teachers in BaseLang.
7. What specific feature did you like the most about the Real World program?
I liked the most the way of having 3 teachers as our favorites so that we can book the classes with them in advance. Moreover there are different teachers with different passions so it’s very easy to have lessons with the teachers who share the same passions as us.
8. How has learning Spanish impacted your life?
I feel proud of myself that I have the skill to learn a language and I have started to understand Spanish songs for 40-50%, which has enhanced my dancing experience already. I am extremely excited for the day when I will be fully conversational in Spanish.
9. Would you recommend this course, if so, why?
Yes, I recommend it very much. Because there are always free slots, we can choose the time which we want and there are teachers with different interests which makes it very easy to discuss different topics.
10. Complete the following sentence “After my first month of BaseLang, I realized that…..”
After my first month of BaseLang, I realized how on earth I didn’t know about Baselang. I would have started the lessons much earlier if I would have got to know about Baselang earlier. I always had a dilemma whether I should learn Spanish by myself or sign up for the course which has been completely removed after I started lessons by myself.
11. Anything else to add?
Everything is up to date on BaseLang. There is always someone online to ask for any help if needed. I never had any issue with anything. Everything went very smoothly.
