After years of trying apps, books, and even in-person classes, Daniel still couldn’t speak Spanish the way he wanted. BaseLang’s Real World program finally gave him the confidence, fluency, and real conversational practice he’d been missing, helping him connect more deeply with people at home and throughout his travels.

BaseLangStories series puts the spotlight on BaseLang students – asking them about their motivations for learning a foreign language, what impact learning Spanish has had on their lives, advice they have for fellow students, and more.

1. What’s your name? Where are you from?

Hi, mi nombre es Daniel Brown y soy de Boulder, Colorado.  Learning languages has always fascinated me, but Spanish was a particular dream of mine for many reasons, whether it be connecting with people while traveling or understanding what the food is on a menu. Understanding Spanish gives me a better understanding of the world that was once foreign to me.

2. Why did you want to learn Spanish?

I wanted to learn Spanish because it’s one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Traveling to Mexico, Spain, Central and South America, I frequently encounter Spanish speakers and wanted to connect more meaningfully with those communities. Beyond that, I’ve always loved traveling to Spanish-speaking countries and experiencing the culture firsthand. Being able to speak Spanish would deepen these experiences and allow me to navigate them more independently.

3. In the past, what did you use to learn Spanish? Which part of learning Spanish did you struggle with the most?

In the past, I tried several methods to learn Spanish, including apps like Duolingo, YouTube tutorials, grammar books, and even a couple of in-person classes. While they helped with vocabulary and basic grammar, none of them truly brought me closer to fluency. I often found myself understanding more than I could say, which was frustrating.

Before discovering BaseLang, the hardest part of learning Spanish was speaking fluently and confidently. Also grammar and conjugation were always my weak points.  I always felt stuck forming sentences on the spot, even though I had a decent vocabulary. My grammar knowledge was theoretical, but I couldn’t apply it naturally in conversations. Baselang allows me to have those conversations with fluent speakers who understand the language, it is a game changer.

4. What obstacle would have prevented you from signing up for BaseLang before?

One hesitation I had before signing up was the cost. I wasn’t sure if it would be worth it or if I’d have enough time to commit. I also wondered if online lessons would be as effective as in-person classes

5. What did you find as a result of signing up?

Signing up for BaseLang was a game-changer. The program helped me break through my speaking barriers by offering unlimited one-on-one lessons with native-speaking tutors. The flexibility of scheduling sessions allowed me to practice at my own pace, and the tutors were incredibly supportive and helpful with learning and correcting my mistakes.

6. What specific feature did you like the most about the Real World program?

The Real World program’s focus on practical, conversational Spanish stood out the most to me. Instead of memorizing grammar rules and vocabulary lists, I practiced real-life scenarios, like ordering food, asking for directions, or having casual conversations. This approach made the language feel alive and useful rather than academic.  Also, using correct grammar and conjugations (the “basics”) I was able to speak more confidently!

7. How has learning Spanish impacted your life?

Learning Spanish has enriched my life in countless ways. I’ve been able to connect with more people, both locally and during my travels. It’s opened doors to new friendships and professional opportunities. It has helped me with my wife’s family, who only speaks Spanish, it is very gratifying to understand and communicate with them. Most importantly, it’s given me a deeper appreciation for Spanish-speaking cultures and people.

8. Would you recommend this course, if so, why?

Absolutely! BaseLang’s structure, affordability, and focus on speaking fluency make it stand out from other language-learning programs. If you’ve struggled with traditional methods, this is a refreshing and effective way to make real progress. It is also ALWAYS available! I can book a class at the same hour often and get to work!

9. Complete the following sentence

“After My First Month of BaseLang, I Realized That…”

…I could actually hold a conversation in Spanish without constantly translating in my head. That feeling of ease and confidence was something I never thought I’d achieve so quickly.

10. Anything else to add (advice for other students, what you wish you had known), etc?

To anyone considering BaseLang: go for it. My only advice is to dive in and make the most of the unlimited lessons. Or go at your own pace and just do 30 minutes every day/ 5 days a week!   Consistency is key. I wish I had known earlier how much fun learning Spanish could be when it’s taught the right way. If you’re on the fence, remember that your goals are achievable with the right support and tools. BaseLang will be the push you need to get there!
