More info

Scott is a teacher from Pittsburgh who works with lots of Spanish-speaking students, and he wanted to connect with them for real, not just through classroom smiles and broken phrases.

Apps and podcasts only got him so far, but BaseLang gave him structure, flexible scheduling, and the speaking practice he was missing. Within his first month, he was chatting with his students, swapping stories about Latin American countries, and building genuine connections in Spanish.

BaseLangStories series puts the spotlight on BaseLang students – asking them about their motivations for learning a foreign language, what impact learning Spanish has had on their lives, advice they have for fellow students, and more.

1.What’s your name and where are you from

Scott Florence, Pittsburgh Pennsylvania

2. Why did you want to learn Spanish?

I wanted to learn Spanish because I am a teacher who works with lots of Spanish speaking students and I want to be able to connect with them better. I also love to travel and meet new people and it’s way easier to get to know people when you can communicate with them and they see that you’re putting in effort to learn their language.

3. In the past, what did you use to learn Spanish?

I used apps like Duolingo, HelloTalk, various resources on Youtube, and podcasts.

4. Before BaseLang, which part of learning Spanish did you struggle with the most?

I struggled with speaking the most because I had nobody to practice with. I could read basic texts and understand content for learners, but my speaking ability was not very good.

5. What obstacle would have prevented you from signing up for BaseLang before?

The price was the thing that made me hesitate the most because I wanted unlimited lessons. But after my experience with the platform it was well worth it because now I feel confident in my Spanish and can communicate with anyone.

6. What did you find as a result of signing up?

A structure for learning Spanish and an abundance of knowledge about language learning and Latin American culture that I never would have known.

7. What specific feature did you like the most about the Real World program?

Flexible scheduling is the best. I love being able to schedule a class when I want to and cancel a class if necessary.

8. How has learning Spanish impacted your life?

I can connect with millions of people who otherwise I would not be able to. Now I can share my life with others and give them a perspective that may be interesting to them. I can talk to my students at work and get to know them better.

9. Would you recommend this course, if so, why?

Absolutely. The flexible scheduling is great, the teachers are very skilled and helpful and the curriculum is excellent. A guaranteed way to improve your spanish.

10. Complete the following sentence

“After my first month of BaseLang, I realized that…..”

I was learning a lot about Latin American countries and I was able to have conversations with my Spanish speakers, which was all new to me.
