Holidays in Spanish: Vocabulary For Popular Celebrations

Today, we’re talking about holidays in Spanish, or los días feriados in español.

With a list like this, we didn’t even attempt to name every holiday in Latin America – or we would be here all day.

Instead, below you’ll find 16 of the most celebrated days of the year (holidays and non-holidays) worldwide.

1) Christmas – La Navidad

• We will spend Christmas with our friends – Pasaremos la navidad con nuestros amigos

2) Christmas Eve – La Nochebuena

• Christmas eve is celebrated on December 24th – La Nochebuena se celebra el 24 de diciembre

3) New Year’s Day – El Año Nuevo

• What would you like to do on New Year’s day? My family is having a big party – ¿Qué te gustaría hacer para el año nuevo? Mi familia hará un fiestón

4) Epiphany – El Día de los Reyes Magos

• Epiphany is held every year on January 6th, in Spain and Latin America – El Día de los Reyes Magos se realiza el 6 de enero de todos los años en España y Latinoamérica

5) Valentine’s Day – El Día de San Valentín, Día de los Enamorados

• María y Javier went on a  blind date on last Valentine’s Day, and they have been together since then – María y Javier tuvieron una cita a ciegas el Día de San Valentín pasado, y han estado juntos desde ese entonces

6) Independence Day – El Día de la Independencia

• On September 16th, Mexico celebrates its Independence Day – El 16 de septiembre México celebra su Día de la Independencia

7) Easter – La Semana Santa, La Pascua

• South American countries have different traditions at Easter – Los países suramericanos tienen diferentes en La Semana Santa

8) April Fool’s Day – El Día de los Santos Inocentes

• People are used to play pranks on April Fool’s Day – Las personas acostumbran a jugar bromas el Día de los Santos Inocentes

9) Hanukkah – Janucá, Fiesta de las Luces

• The traditional meal on Hanukkah is latkes, also called fried potato muffins – El platillo tradicional en Janucá son los latkes, o tambien llamados pastelitos de papa fritos

10) Mother’s Day – Día de la Madre

• I’m thinking of taking my mum to that new restaurant on Mother’s Day – Estoy pensando en llevar a mi mamá a ese restaurante nuevo en el Día de la Madre

11) Father’s Day – Día del Padre

• On Father’s Day, we used to have a barbecue with our dad and the rest of the family –  Solíamos hacer una parrillada el Día del Padre con nuestro papá y el resto de la familia

12) Columbus Day – Día de la Raza, Día de la Hispanidad

• Columbus Day is celebrated on October 12th in Peru, Venezuela and Uruguay – El Día de la Raza se celebra el 12 octubre en Perú, Venezuela y Uruguay

We should mention that this celebration has many different names in Spanish, depending where in Latin America you are.

13) Halloween – La Noche de Brujas

• Do you fancy dressing up on Halloween again? Last year you lost the costume contest – ¿Quieren disfrazarse de nuevo en la Noche de Brujas? Ustedes perdieron en el concurso de disfraces el año pasado

14) Thanksgiving Day – El Día de Acción de Gracias

• Thanksgiving Day is celebrated in Canada in October, while in the US it is held the in November – El Día de Acción de Gracias se celebra en octubre en Canadá, mientras que en los Estados Unidos es celebrado en noviembre

15) Day of the Dead – El Día de los Muertos

• During the Day of the Dead, many Mexican families pay tribute to their deceased loved ones – Durante el Día de los Muertos muchas familias mexicanas rinden homenaje a sus seres queridos fallecidos

(this Mexican holiday is not exactly celebrated worldwide, but is something that has more attention outside of Mexico in recent years)

16) St. Patrick’s Day –  El Día de San Patricio

• St. Patrick’s Day takes place every March 17, in order to commemorate Saint Patrick’s death, patron saint of Ireland – El Día de San Patricio se lleva a cabo cada 17 de marzo, para conmemorar la muerte de San Patricio, patrón de Irlanda
