Explained: 12 Ways You Can Say “To Get” In Spanish

In English, we tend to rely on the verb “to get” as an all-encompassing verb, that has a ton of different uses.

• You get something nice for your birthday
• You get in from work at 6pm
• You get the joke
• You get a cold
• You get rich

And so on.

In Spanish, the same one-for-all verb does not exist and so you must learn the several ways to express “to get”, and apply each one correctly in the right context.

In this post, we are going to list 12 ways to express an English “to get” in Spanish, starting with the most common use.

1. Obtener, Conseguir – To obtain, to acquire

• I need to get a ladder, so I can paint the ceiling – Necesito conseguir una escalera para poder pintar el techo.

• Where did you get those shoes? I was looking for them – ¿Dónde conseguiste esos zapatos? Estaba buscándolos.

• Will she get the promotion? She’s a hard-working person, and she’s very committed to the company  – ¿Ella obtendrá el ascenso? Es una persona trabajadora, y está comprometida con la empresa.

2. Comprar algo, traer algo – To buy something, To bring something

• I need to get apples and oranges at the grocery store – Necesito comprar manzanas y naranjas en la tienda.

• You couldn’t get the tickets for the concert, because they had sold out last month – No pudiste comprar los boletos para el concierto, porque se habían agotado el mes pasado.

• Carmen is thinking of getting a new car next month – Carmen está pensando en comprar un carro nuevo el mes que viene.

• Please get me some food. I’m starving! – Traéme comida, por favor. iMe muero de hambre!

3. Entender, comprender –  To understand, To comprehend

• I don’t get what you mean. Please, could you explain me? – No entiendo a qué te refieres. ¿Podrías explicarme?

• Carlos and Daniel didn’t get the joke. It was hilarious! – Carlos y Daniel no entendieron el chiste. iFue graciosísimo!

• Maritza is finishing a Math test now, and there is just one problem left she doesn’t get it yet – Maritza está terminando una prueba de matemáticas ahora, y sólo le queda un problema que no entiende aún

• Do you guys get what I’m saying? – ¿Entienden lo que quiero decir?

4. Llegar a un lugar – To arrive somewhere

• What time do you get in from work? – ¿A qué hora llegas del trabajo?

• Last night, I got home really late, because my car broke down – Anoche, llegué muy tarde a mi casa, porque mi carro se averió

• Laura always gets to her job on time – Laura siempre llega a tiempo a su trabajo

• How are you getting home tonight?  – ¿Cómo llegarás a casa esta noche?

5. Sacar buenas calificaciones / notas – To get good grades

• They need to get good grades this semester – Ellos necesitan sacar buenas calificaciones este semestre

• If you don’t get good grades this year, you won’t receive your surprise – Si no sacas buenas notas este año, no recibirás tu sorpresa

• I didn’t get a good grade in the test, because I hadn’t studied. – No saqué buena nota en el examen porque no había estudiado

6. Enfermar, resfriar, dar gripe /  un resfriado – To get sick

• I feel like I’m getting the cold – Siento que me resfriare

• You can get malaria from mosquitoes – Te puedes enfermar de malaria por los mosquitos

• I got the flu last month and it was awful – Me dio gripe el mes pasado y fue terrible

7. Recibir – To  receive something

• Did you get anything nice for your birthday? – ¿Recibiste algo chévere en tu cumpleaños?

• Ben hasn’t got my email yet – Ben aún no ha recibido mi correo electronico

• They will get what they deserve! – Recibirán lo que se merecen!

8. Agarrar / coger / tomar un taxi, autobús, tren o vehiculo – To travel somewhere by bus, train or other vehicle

• Shall we get the bus to the school? – ¿Tomamos el bus a la escuela?

• Hurry up, and get a taxi! – iApúrate, y agarra un taxi!

• They are getting the train to Madrid at 6pm – Ellas tomarán el tren a Madrid a las 6pm

9. Recoger – To go somewhere and bring back someone or something

• Wait here while I get the car – Espera aquí mientras recojo el auto

• I’ll get my kids, then I take them back to the school – Recogeré a mis hijos, luego los llevo de regreso a la escuela

• Get you back-pack, and let’s go. We are running out of time – Recoge tu mochila y vámonos. Se nos está agotando el tiempo

10. Hacerse, volverse, convertirse – To become

• My sister is turning 28 years old tomorrow, yet she feels like 70. She is always in a bad mood, and I suppose it’s because she’s getting old – Mi hermana cumplirá 28 años mañana, pero ella siente como de 70. Siempre está de malhumorada, supongo que es porque está envejeciendo.

• Pepe had health mental problems, he got crazy – Pepe tenía problemas de salud mental, se volvió loco

• Since Ignacio was a young man, he was dreaming about getting rich – Desde que Ignacio era joven soñaba con hacerse millonario

11. Atrapar / agarrar a alguien – To catch someone

• The police will soon get the thief – La policía atrapará pronto al ladrón

• They were running so fast, and you couldn’t get them – Ellas estaban corriendo muy rápido, y no pudiste atraparlas

• The shoplifter was trying to run away with all the money. Fortunately, the shop’s owner got him – El ratero estaba intentando escapar. Afortunadamente, el dueño de la tienda lo atrapó

12. Convencer, persuadir – To convince, persuade

• I got him to give me a pay rise – Lo convencí de que me diera un aumento de sueldo.

• I’ll try to get her to go to tomorrow’s party – La persuadiré para que vaya a la fiesta de mañana.

• Jessica and her brother have gotten her mom to go to the movies tonight – Jessica y su hermano han convencido a su mamá de ir al cine esta noche.
