On June 24th, two powerful earthquakes struck Venezuela. We’ve now been able to reach all of our teachers, and we wanted to share an update.

We’re deeply relieved to be able to tell you that all of our teachers have been accounted for.

However, some have lost people close to them, and some have suffered damage to their homes.

Here’s what we’re doing:

#1 Helping our teachers financially. For the teachers directly affected, we’re providing some financial aid to help with the immediate costs they’re facing. It’s a small gesture in the face of what they’re dealing with, but we hope it takes a little weight off them during a hard time.

#2 Giving people room to breathe. Even teachers whose homes weren’t damaged are carrying a heavy emotional weight. We’re giving paid time off to some of those teachers who need space to process, grieve, or simply rest. This is why you may continue to see reduced class availability in the coming days, and we hope you’ll understand.

#3 Raising funds for those most in need. The crisis reaches far beyond our own team. Across Venezuela, families have lost their homes and children have lost their parents, leaving far too many kids as orphans.

That’s why we’ve chosen to support Hogar Bambi Venezuela, an organization that has spent 30 years caring for the country’s most vulnerable children. They’re working directly with protection authorities on the ground to shelter as many children as possible during this crisis.

We’ve set up a GoFundMe to help, and BaseLang will match up to the first $5,000 in donations. The fundraiser will run for the next two weeks, because the need is urgent and the time to help is now.
