How was the Real World Curriculum designed?

The curriculum goes from level 0 to 9 and it is focused on learning for the real world.

  • Level 0 is survival Spanish, which is exactly how it sounds – words and phrases for getting by.
  • Levels 1-3 are basic. This is where we’ll give you the fundamental building blocks of Spanish grammar, and the most important vocabulary.
  • Levels 4-6 are intermediate. This is where you’ll get the rest of the most used grammar. It’s also where we will start loading up on more vocabulary.
  • Level 7-9 are advanced. This is where you will get the last bits of grammar and vocabulary.

You also have access to hundreds of ‘elective’ lessons, classified into three categories based on the focus of the lesson:

  • Situational: Lessons based on real-life scenarios (e.g., shopping, job interviews, asking for directions). These are available from Basic Level 3 to Advanced Level 5.

  • Conversational: Lessons focused on encouraging fluid conversation on general topics. They include visual prompts, audio materials, and open-ended questions.

  • Thematic: Lessons centered on specialized subjects such as science, art, or politics. They aim to build advanced vocabulary and reinforce all four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing).

While the curriculum is there and the vast majority of students use it, you don’t have to. Ultimately, you are in control. You can use your class time as you’d like – do one of our lessons, bring your own materials, just talk or do anything else (within reason).
